Ratings are given specialty coffee by standarized comparative coffe cuppings. Most cuppers giving numberical ratings use the guidelines and standards as set by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA). In cupping competititions, these ratings then give ranking to the coffees. Panama offers their annual top ranked coffees at auction.
Consistent ranking and rating of particular coffees help you in choosing. You can tell by consistent top rankings and ratings that most judges choose these coffees and therefore so might you.
